Eid ul-Fitr - Forgive and Forget

Eid means festivity in Arabic and Fitr means breaking of the fast and so Eid ul-Fitr symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. It marks the end of a month fasting and it is the beginning of Syawal where muslims around the world celebrate it with joy and forgiveness. Throughout Syawal as well, muslims will usually visit their relatives and held 'open houses'. Friends, colleagues and neighbours are invited to partake in the festivities and delicious treats, regardless of their race and background.

Diwali - Let There be Light!

Diwali which is derived from Sanskrit means 'rows of light'. It is a very exciting and colourful event. Homes are cleaned to welcome the New Year and windows are opened so that the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, can enter. It is believed that she cannot enter a house which is not lit up, so every household burns special Diwali clay lamps (diyas) to light the way for the goddess, which is why the event is also known as the Festival of Lights.

Eid ul-Fitr and Diwali are 10 of the biggest festivals celebrated in Malaysia. And this year, the Malaysian MARJON students wish to bring the heat of the celebration to the wet and windy Plymouth. On the 18th October 2009, an open house was held from noon till 3pm, where Malaysians across Plymouth, other international students and locals partake in the celebrations. To heat up the festivities, colourful traditional cultural outfits were worn on that day and special dishes like Nasi Beriyani, Nasi Hujan Panas, Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Curry, Soto and a whole lot more were served on that day.

It is undeniable that there were not many students left in MARJON during Eid day, as most of them either going back to Malaysia or going for tour elsewhere. But, that does not mean we cannot celebrate it the Malaysian way!. Open house events were organized by few Malaysian Houses in Marjon Student Village. From the very first day of Hari Raya, till the new students came, open house is still going on. Dissertation, Lesson Presentation and other assignments does not seem to bother us from celebrating Hari Raya and strengthen our relationship.

We from MAM would like to use this opportunity to say our thank you and appreciation to the members of houses below for organizing open house event, and made the celebration millions away from home still meaningful.

27^th September 2009 will be one of the most unforgettable days for Malaysian Marjon. It was a day when the new 49 Malaysian students from IPGM Campus Gaya and Campus Kota Bharu arrived at MARJON. This mean, our family is now bigger! (and they might need to change our accommodation name from “Student Village” to “Malaysian Village”).

Few representative from MAM, together with Michelle Charlick, one of the officer at International Education Centre went to pick them at the Heathrow Airport on 27^th September.

They arrived at Marjon around 12.45pm, and the seniors were busy in order to make sure they settled down well in MARJON.

On 27^th Night, MAM organized a small Welcome Dinner for the new students

. This Welcome Dinner was intended for the old and the new students to get know each other. The new students were also introduced to MAM officers, and the President also briefed them about their induction week.

Thank you to all seniors and MAM officers, for helping in with the junior arrival. Thank you also to seniors who have involved in preparing food for Welcome Dinner and to all other seniors who have given help and support in order to make sure our new family members are settled down well.

We hope that as our family is bigger now, our bond will also grow stronger!.
